Connections are things that I can crack on about a some length, not worth a toss to many but I am fascinated by them, excited by them and most of all informed by them. Reading the great man on his painting I so enjoyed his thoughts on his connections and influences. 'I am a pupil of Whistler, that is to say, at one remove, of Courbet, and at two removes, of Corot. About six or seven years ago, under the influence in France of Pissarro, himself a pupil of Corot, aided in England by Lucien Pissarro and by Gore, a pupil of Steer, who in turn learned from Monet, I have tried to recast my painting entirely and to observe colour in the shadows'. Brilliant.
